Kids Crafts Made Funner With Your Printer

March 6, 2010 · Filed Under Craft · 1 Comment

It can be challenging to have kids, espcially when you need to find productive and creative things to keep them busy. If you own a computer and a printer, and can replace your ink cartridges when low on ink, you are at an advantage in that area. There is a wide variety of options for getting your kids to be creative.

If you have a budding artist on your hands, you may want to allow him to use the paint program in the computer. Painting through a computer is very different than painting with your hands and a brush. It may bring new ideas out while it presents new challenges. If you make sure that you have enough ink to print out anything your children create, you will make sure that you can have a finished product.

Yet another thing you can use your printer for is to have your kids begin a scrapbook. A great way to store the photos and other memorabilia that can keep memories of good times around for a long time is scrapbooking. Don’t forget to make sure that there is enough black ink and color ink in your ink cartridges to insure that you’ll be getting the best results. Make copies of photos for your kids to crop and place in their own albums. You can go even further by helping your children create and print stickers to put in their scrapbooks to make them even more personalized.

One space saving way to keep your kid’s science project that many parents don’t even think of is to take a picture of the finished project. If your kids create projects for school or home, and they are too big to keep, you can take a picture of the finished project, print it out on your printer, and keep the photo as a reminder of the beautiful project.

You can look up some printable crafts online as well, just make sure that your ink cartridges aren’t low on ink first. This is one of several possible ways to get your children excited about the possibilities associated with electronic creations, not to mention to get the creative juices flowing.

You can find and print sewing patterns online to help you teach your child how to sew, if you would like. By beginning with something simple, such as paper-based patterns to sew along to, a beginning sewer can more easily learn how to sew a straight line. Provided that there is enough ink in your ink cartridges, you can print out a handful of patterns for your little one to follow along to so he or she can practice. You can also find simple patterns for beginner projects to do together.

Using your printer is a great way to bring out the creative side of your kids. You might be surprised by the things your children can come up with after they’ve been given some guidance.

Bead Craft and the Importance of Patterning

March 6, 2010 · Filed Under Craft · Comment

Patterning is probably the toughest part of beadcraft to do well.  Our brains are hard-wired to seek out patterns in the world around us, and to organize data into small bits that are easy to recognize.  This is the reason, for example, that things like phone numbers and social security numbers are broken down into small segments, separated by dashes.  Simply put, they are easier to remember that way.

Oftentimes, a novice to the world of beadwork will be tempted to simply use whatever is on hand, and the results will be haphazard randomness.  Now, it is true that this approach can sometimes yield attractive results.  There is, however, a growing body of evidence indicating that symmetry and identifiable patterns are one of the keys to defining what we see and understand as “beauty.”  A student of bead craft would do well to take these lessons to heart, which brings us back ‘round to the importance of patterning.

By all means, feel free to experiment!  Part of the fun of the hobby lies in trying new and unusual things and messing around with unusual bead craft ideas!  But even if you dabble in chaos and randomness, DO, at some point, give serious consideration to studying the art of patterning.  When you do, you might find yourself spending hours, if not days pouring over and experimenting with the possibilities till you hit upon something that’s really striking and memorable.  Do not, however, mistake complexity for a good design.  At the end of the day, the most elegant answer is often the simplest.  Consider for instance, the classic strand of pearls.  That’s about the simplest pattern you could ask for, and yet it is timeless!

Some people (both novices and veterans in the bead craft world) spend hours upon hours experimenting with arrangements until they hit upon something that is truly compelling.  More common though, especially to those new to beadwork, is a sense of intimidation.  This is unfortunate, but the overwhelming majority of hobbyists will outgrow that fear as they gain more bead craft experience.  Still, if you have recently taken up beadwork as a hobby and find yourself struggling with the difficulty of developing your own patterns, you can find a number of sites on the web offering free beading projects and pattern ideas and examples.  Make use of these in your designs, and before very long, you’ll probably find yourself thinking, “I like this pattern, but wouldn’t it be neat if…” and almost before you know it, you’ll be on your way to creating your own, wholly unique bead craft design.

The mechanics of bead craft are simple.  The patterning…less so.  It’s a learned skill and it can be a little intimidating.  Do yourself a favor though, and if you’re not coming up with ideas on your own, or if you’re a little intimidated by the though of having to, check out on or offline resources for inspirations for beading ideas.  You’ll be glad you did, and from there, well on your way to mastering the fine art of patterning!

Model Train Table

March 6, 2010 · Filed Under Craft · 1 Comment

So where are you going to place your model train anyway?  That looks pretty good but did you say it gets wet a bit in here when it poors.  That could definitely throw a wrench in the works, huh?  It’s good to carefully think through where we place our setup.  Here’s some ideas:

Just throw it on the floor like your laundry in college:

The lazy solution is to just leave it on the ground.  This preserves the time and trouble of getting or constructing a hobby surface, but it is not very good for tinier locomotives.  Bending over and kneeling down do not make for the best hobbying experiences for adults.  This sort of an overview of the smaller gauges just makes them look tiny and uninteresting.  Not to mention that your locomotives are much more likely to be stepped on and damaged in careless moments.  You really need a display hobby locomotive surface for the HO and tinier variety trains.  Even O trains look better on a display area.

Pre-existing shelves

In some houses there are natural display areas or elevated spaces that lend themselves to hobby locomotive layouts.  Again, the main benefit of this is that you don’t have to go through the extra labor and cost of setting up a toy train table.  Very few of us are this blessed however.  There are some obvious problems to most random display spots.  These spots tend to be too small for a model train setup and they tend not to be configured in the right way.  So, such areas dictate a host of limitations to your hobby training.  This is never a good way to grow your toy train empire.

Another lucky possibility is that you happen to have a spare area just lying around somewhere:

Sometimes you get lucky and serendipitously come across an area at home.  This helps in that you can carry it to the spot you would like, but most tables that are not specifically built for hobby training have other drawbacks.  Not only are many such tables wobbly, but you still have to adjust your train display to conform with the pre-existing measurements of your table rather than the opposite way around.

Home-made toy locomotive tables:

Since lots of us enthusiasts are good with our hands a very popular decision of toy trainers is to make a surface ourselves.  Often we handymen and women will extend an existing space to make it work for the toy locomotive layout we had in mind.  You can also really give your train table some unique personality in this manner.  The obvious negative here is the amount of time and skill that it takes to make such a surface.  Just as huge of a problem is the fact that such tables tend to be permanently one size and as your toy training empire expands you have to go through the trouble of building yet another area to increase your surface space.  Also, if you are pressed for time, this will really add a substantial amount of time that you have to spend getting ready before you even start your actual model training.  I won’t put down homemade surfaces except to say that if your engineering talents don’t extend beyond model locomotives, trying to build a table can really be a black hole of time and effort that you may not have much to show for on the other side.

Hobby surfaces, the decision if for those who are willing to shell out the clams:

There are these special kind of hobby surface that is just perfect for toy training.  These sturdy but lightweight tables come in 2’ by 4’ cutouts that are designed to be connected together in any fashion that you would like so that multiple areas can be put together to fill any space.  These tables do away with many of the spatial limitations that you might have had with other table choices.  This rights the balance of power between you and your table making it so that you dictate the shape of the area rather than the surface dictating the shape of your layout.  Also, because they are lightweight they can more easily be moved out of the way and since they can easily be changed and added to as you see fit, they can grow with your model locomotiveing ambitions.  You can also more easily transport your surface if you want to show your design around.  For this reason, these areas are really the best option for model locomotive displays.

With your [table|surface|area] [choice|decision|option] out of the way you are now free to really embark on your [model|toy|hobby] [train|locomotive] adventure.  Good blessed and happy modeling!

Vintage Model Railroads

March 6, 2010 · Filed Under Craft · Comment

I know people collect lots of things.  Some people collect stamps, some hobbyists collect coins and some collect trading cards.  There’s something ususual about collecting historic model locomotives though.  When you collect something that actually still does what it is meant to in real life it is different than when you take that thing out of real life.  So it’s not like you are just taking a gander at them in some book or on some wall.  They still can be caused to serve their function in the world.  Try doing that with your stamp collection!

What are the cool collectible locomotives today?  Here’ the large three:

Lionel [train|locomotive]s:

First of all there are Lionel trains.  Lionel train has been the longest lasting model crafting obsession.  When you collect a Lionel locomotive you are collecting toy train royalty.  Through savvy advertising they connected their locomotives with Christmas and by World War II when Lionel was forced to shut down manufacturing to aid in the patriotic struggle Lionel was the accepted gold standard of the model train world.  Lionel’s historic model trains are some of the most popular and widely purchased locomotives around.   The rocker, Neil Young fell in love with Lionel locomotives as kid and became a collector and then part owner of the company as an adult.  Lionel has a strong literature that helps support it.  Because Lionel was on top in the 1950s and because the post War era was the high point of model hobbying, it is no surprise that Lionel should be as well regarded as the company is..  The truth is that Lionel was in the process of being usurped by other companies during that period and that most of us, like Neil Young, didn’t actually get Lionel trains as Christmas gifts only makes Lionel more popular now as a collector’s item.

American Flyers:

The only model locomotive brand that can really give Lionel a run for its money is American Flyer.  A. C. Gilbert’s attempt to take the Midwest company and make it a challenger of the juggernaut Lionel ultimately failed.  Gilbert’s effort, however, created some of the most beloved trains around and collectors go absolutely ape doo doo over these vintage toy trains. The uniqueness of s scale adds to the mystique of the American Flyer brand. Perhaps no model locomotive release has been more anticipated by enthusiasts as the upcoming American Flyers release by Lionel LLC.  They are sure to sell like hot cakes.

Ives:

If you actually want to get a locomotive that no one has try locating an old Ives train. Just before World War II it was an Ives, American Flyer, Lionel three way fight for supremacy.  Ives did not survive but if you are lucky you might be able to discover one of their classic locomotives.  Most are in O gauge just like Lionel but they are real collector’s items these days.

Clock operated [train|locomotive]s of the Victorian era:

If you really want to go old school you can’t go older than a 19th century clock operated train.  These are mostly shown at shows these days but if you can actually find one, you’ll have a locomotive that is really a part of the creation of model locomotives.  During this era in model training the toy locomotive market was dominated by German imports. This would persist until World War I when a sense of patriotism  pushed potential buyers away from these foreign models.  You can really make out the hand crafting on these simple wooden trains. No plugs, no batteries, no electricity—these are wind-up trains in the truest sense.  They were largely purchased by the upper class back in the day and that’s who can afford to collect them now.  They clearly had the children of the rich in mind.  These trains can really capture the imagination of another age.  In fact, you might say that model training came to us just like kindergarten.  Both were part of Germany’s obsessions with childrearing in the early 20th century.

Whatever kind of historic model locomotive you choose to collect you will no doubt learn quite a bit about the history of toy trains, toys in general and us as nation.  You could choose a far worse hobby.

Economical Ideas For A Novice Scrapbooker Like Yourself

March 6, 2010 · Filed Under Craft · Comment

Looking for a new hobby to pour your time and creativity into? Then scrapbooking may be the one you’re looking for. Evidently, it’s become one of the most popular crafts nowadays. It helps you organize your photographs, at the same time employ your artistic flair.

However, when you get too involved with it, you might end up spending a huge sum of money for the hobby. A trip to the arts and crafts store will tell you there are some serious scrapbookers out there. Some of the tools and supplies for it can be really quite expensive.

However, this should not be a cause of alarm and steering clear of the hobby. You can try making a scrapbook even without spending a huge amount of money for it, especially for a newcomer like yourself. You can come up with a fantastic album by using materials found in the home. And of course by using your creativity as well.

Let’s begin with scrapbooking papers. Some hardcore scrapbookers will readily pay for expensive sheets where their creativity will be spread all over. However, you can use folders or construction papers used by your kids for school projects. Never mind they may have writings or drawings on them. Photos and other decorative elements may cover them up.

Regarding the cover of the pages, you can simply fashion one out of used cartons or boxes. Or you may rip off unused contents of a binder, and use it as a makeshift album cover. Throw in lots of love and creativity in designing the cover to make it really interesting-looking. You’ll save a lot of money if you skip buying ready-to-use scrapbook albums.

Where you will get your embellishments is practically unlimited. But you can start with cutting colorful designs out of the glossy pages of magazines. Decorations in greeting cards will also make for great scrapbook pages decorations. But be careful where you cut out your designs from. Relatives and friends will surely find your works daunting, regardless how artistically executed, should they see stuff from erotic comics and the likes.

For edge trimmings, you can cut into long strips unused wallpapers. Fabrics with bold patterns, colorful buttons and many others will also come in handy. You may also use actual objects appearing in the photographs used. For example, include the invitation or confetti on your daughter’s birthday party, or sands and shells from a beach vacation.

As with scrapbooking tools, there are so many of them, and some of them can cost quite a lot. But the truth is you can do without them. That is, if you know how to be resourceful and inventive. As long as you have a reliable pair of scissors and a cutter, then you’ll be just fine.

As you can see, creating a scrapbook doesn’t have to be costly. You may go online to find more ways to turn used and everyday items into embellishments. Your creativity, more than anything else, will make a scrapbook look unique and charming.

Scrapbooking Ideas: How To Make Your Creations Special

March 6, 2010 · Filed Under Craft · Comment

There’s a reason why many people are into scrapbooking these days. First, it allows for a unique way of storing and showcasing photographs and keepsakes. Second, it enables you to express yourself through creative means. Browsing through the pages of a scrapbook is a great way to revive special memories.

There are several ways which can make your creations unique. A trip to an arts and crafts store will tell you got a wide array of choices when it comes to materials and supplies. However, if you want something which is one of a kind, you should put your inventiveness to use.

There are many tutorial sites on the net. They will come in handy should you need an inspiration on a page you’re trying to design. Perhaps a friend or a colleague also into the hobby for some time now could lend a helping hand. As a beginner, you may need some time to find your scrapbooking strengths.

Sometimes an entire album is dedicated to a particular happening. For example, a Disney scrapbook is a great idea if you’ve amassed tons of photos and souvenirs during your family’s Disneyland trip. Indeed, fun photos are always a treat to share with everybody via scrapbooking.

You may also divide an album into small sections, but making up a common theme. Take for example having a week-long vacation with the entire family. One section may be dedicated while at the airport or on the airplane during the commencement of the trip. Another may contain snapshots of everybody with a giro ski helmet on during the skiing resort part of the vacation. Then another may be about roasting marshmallows around a bonfire.

There’s no limit to anything you wish to immortalize through scrapbooking. Your son finally getting his dream black sport watch on his birthday sure is an unforgettable milestone in his life. You may cut into long strips the wrapper used for the gift, and use them as borders. If the wristwatch comes with a box, you may even cut out the top and paste it on the page as well.

Wherever you go, bring a small container with you for gathering materials you can use. For example, a weekend will be spent by the family at a beach resort. Think ahead what you can use to decorate scrapbook pages dedicated to the weekend trip. You may pick up flat shells. You may buy postcards or small souvenirs at local shops there. You may even collect sand and rocks, and make the pages come to life!

When it comes to decorating your album, you’re only limited by your own imagination. The more effort and inventiveness into every page, the more special your scrapbook album becomes.

Historic Model Trains

March 6, 2010 · Filed Under Craft · 1 Comment

It’s really hard these days to persuade kids to be interested in our traditions.    If it doesn’t connect to the power grid and add to the monthly electrical bill, lots of boys and girls are just not that into it.  This is after all the cyber age and if a child isn’t reading three things at once he feels like he is slacking.  Even though they consider history to be what happened last week, it’s still important to find ways to get them involved with it.  It’s not enough to know that there were some guys named Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson and Benjamin who now have their faces on our money.  I don’t mean to get on my high horse, but it’s our duty as patriotic Americans to pass on some sense of our rich traditions to them.  So how do we get them to crack the book on the traditions of this country without feeling like we’re pulling teeth? model locomotives can put our youngsters on the track to becoming more culturally and historically literate.  Yes.  That’s right, historic model locomotives.  Here’s how to teach history with toy locomotives:

Use locomotives as a subtle vehicle for history:

If you’ve already gotten your kids involved in model locomotives, a great second step is to create a model train set-up that accurately reveals a particular period and location. Imagine a set-up that is set during Reconstruction in the American Southwest.  You can get your kids to research this period and then add period details that will really add to the enjoyment and historical accuracy of your toydesign.  They might read about the telegraph and add telegraph lines next to the tracks.  A ghost town that failed to capitalize on the railroad because it didn’t get a stop might be shown tantalizingly close to the track.  Maybe even have a few washed out prospectors still panning for gold in the nearby stream.

Spice up the tired old school project by swapping in a toy train setup instead:

You might also manage to talk your kid’s history teacher into allowing him to bring in a historic model locomotive set-up in place of the usual boring diorama.  You will need to lay it out on a portable table and possibly help your youngster bring it in on the day that it is due, but the combination of historic detail and the fascination that such trains inspire simply on their own are likely to really go over well.  Just imagine, for example, adding a toy locomotive display to your kid’s essay on Jesse James.  As your period specific train rounds the curve there are Jesse and his whole gang just waiting to attack and continue his wrong headed crusade.  It’s sure to be a coup!

Visit a model train Museum:

If you’re anywhere in the American West you are never far from historical train sites and museums where toy trains are often featured.  If your local historic train site doesn’t have model locomotives consider suggesting they incorporate some to the curator or manager of the site.  In some places, model locomotive clubs often put on model train events.. Just google it and you are sure to come into contact with your local toy train society.

Whatever you decide to do, you will find that model locomotives are a door to the past even if you don’t explicitly use them as such.  Even if you just do model training without even considering the educational possibilities you will inevitably foster a greater sense of historical knowledge simply by handling these little mechanical doorways to the past.

G Scale Model Railroad Designs (For Small Businesses)

March 6, 2010 · Filed Under Craft · Comment

I know what you mean, my wallet’s been feeling a little on the low side these days too. Times are tough.  REALLY tough! However I stumbled on a scheme the other day that just might help your small establishment. It was a memory from living in the big city.  This was in New York City.  Close to the end of the year mom would take us out to the big park for a little walk but it was too uncomfortable to stay outside for too long so we would end up at a department store. It was one of the biggest, multistory department stores but it really isn’t important which. There, right in the store would be this spectacular toy train display.  You had to wait because there were so many kids but after a time get your turn to press the button that started one of the many trains to move around the setup. What a great memory we had there!  The track was big as a swimming pool!  It was a complete dimension onto itself.

And here’s the rub, even though my mom didn’t have a lot money and always came in with the intention of never parting with a dime, by the end of the day it seemed like we without fail ended up buying some little trinket, even if it was just a hot dog from one the street venders.  So here’s the thought I had:

Use display g scale railroad trains to draw customers in:

Toy retailers have known this for a long time and hardware stores have found this a natural match since people can buy the materials and kits for model railroading all right there.  But I think other kinds of establishments could really increase revenue by having a model railroad, especially eye catching g scale trains and tracks.  Any store with a display window that looks onto a busy walk way like in a commercial area could really draw parents and their kids in.  It wouldn’t even have to be a establishment related to miniature trains. A pediatrician’s practice might just have a g gauge display to keep the kids busy while they waited for their appointments or for prescriptions. The display would give the business a considerable leg up over its competition.  Some parents would even be grateful for the time that their kids are enthralled by the locomotives to shop for themselves. The increased business would be well worth the costs in terms of space, start up costs and maintenance.  Surely, anywhere families are forced to wait would be helped from such an addition.  Thankful parents would make for return business.

Consider a model train setup for your Bed and Breakfast and Restaurant:

This would be well suited for that Bread an Breakfast you’ve always dreamed of. Want to have a quirky feel for your Texas style barbecue but can’t think of what to do?  You could market your Bed-and-Breakfast as a locomotive Bed-and-Breakfast and you could have several trains.  If you have a swimming pool in the back or a patio where people eat you could have a locomotive that makes it rounds around by the seats and rig it so that the train actually carries out the drinks to people. The experience would be sure to draw people with their kids and you could make a little bit of surplus revenue by selling toys.  If you have a local tourist trap that is train related you could create a tie-in to this site. Think of the American history tie-ins in your nearby area.

It’s a tough world out there these days.  But that is exactly why it is the perfect time to look for a business increasing angle like this. A distinctive business identity is sure to help you succeed in these hard economic times.  I’ve only skimmed the surface. Imagine a miniature golf park where a g scale train winds through the entire course, going across ponds and across runways and where the players alter the train’s course by sinking holes…
