HO Model Railroad

March 29, 2010 · Filed Under Craft · Comment

So this is where you’re rigging your track, huh? It would be really inconvenient anywhere else? Okay. Nothing to worry about.  4’ x 8’ is a perfect amount of room for a model railroad.  HO model railroad manuals recommend this as a minimum space requirement.  HO?  Golly, you haven’t heard about HO? It’s the most often used scale by those just being initiated into model training.  Real trains are 87 times larger than their HO models. Want my two bits on your track plan?

A loop:  This is the most basic layout for a model railroad.  In this format the train just clocks around in an oval. It’s an simple solution for a limited space.  To keep this from getting boring you’ll want to make something of the empty space at its center. This setup demands a little model city at the center.  Having a little whistle stop that your train pulls into could also add an extra dimension of interest to this very basic setup.

A figure 8 set-up can add a small bit of pizzazz as well: One of the best alternatives to the simple oval is the figure 8 set-up. This set-up dices into the large interior space that makes the basic oval a bit awkward. The figure 8 divides the space into four distinct work spaces where you can still add eye catching detail to the landscape by setting up little buildings and other landscape features.

Concentric tracks also work well:  A loop within a loop works better than you might think at first.  You can have a switch point where your train jumps from the short to the exterior track and back again. Although a train yard usually brings this setup together, you might try a artificial lake at its center instead.

Two train tracks:  Two trains dueling for our attention is another way to go with concentric tracks.   Now it’s a competition to see which little train will draw the most interest. Don’t bother with extra decoration, there’s a battle royale on.

For more options use smaller N scale trains:  To get more bang for your buck but not increase your track area, use n-scale trains.  Their real world models dwarf these little guys by 160 times. With these guys you will no longer be limited to the three types of formats I have mentioned.  You will be able to add some real fascination to your layout and to even design some variation in your landscape. Try a little city at one pole and a lush forrest on the other.  The drawback, of course, is that n scale is so small that a lot of people just do not find them very captivating.

Your imagination can overcome many of the drawbacks here. Space limitations are persistent problem in model training but the puzzle solving aspect of this can be quite enjoyable.  Some of the most interesting model train setups I have seen were in spaces where you would never have thought to make a model train layout in the first place.

N Scale Model Railroad Table

March 27, 2010 · Filed Under Craft · 3 Comments

The surface where you layout your toy train set up can make a huge difference as well.  I know, you like those tiny N scale trains so it doesn’t seem like such a significant deal. Everything is so tiny in N scale that it just doesn’t appear like you need all that sturdy a surface for it. Take a sec.  Let me try to set out my point. The type of surface you have your N gauge locomotives on can really be very significant.  Here are some reasons why:

A unbalanced surface won’t do:

Straight off, you don’t want to choose a table that is weak and that will lean or that can be easily pushed down.  When you show your new setup to your tinier family members you don’t want the little tykes to be able to accidentally derail your trains with just an accidental touch. One bad moment and your locomotives could be in pieces scattered about the floor. What a nightmare! Don’t leave yourself open to that.  If you’re practiced with your hardware you might fashion this yourself.

Cool Tip: Here’s a cool suggestion. If you happen to have an good ping-pong table you don’t use any more, then stop thinking of it as your ping pong table and start thinking of it as your new locomotive table. Ping pong tables are nice and big so they free lots of options for your layout.  If you have HO or smaller, you will never need any added room than this.  Even if you have a Lionel O or one of those new S gauge locomotives, you’ll find that you can really do a great deal with a table this large.

If you like to go places with your trains, you need a well designed hobby table:

If you plan on taking your N size model train layout around and showing it for strangers, you may want to invest in a travel ready train table made especially for arts and crafts. There are a few different internet sites that devote themselves to designing these kinds of train tables that are sturdy but light weight and easily portable.

Cool tip #2: Here’s a room saver: Lower your table from the ceiling.  Want your garage back for your cars?   You can use pulleys to lift and drop your locomotive whenever you would like.

Domino tables:

Domino tables are you best bet. These tables can be united in any shape or setup.  What these great domino tables allow you to do most however is to develop your locomotive layout in any way that you would like.  Unlike other types of tables that demand you modify your scheme to fit their designs, these tables allow you to control the limits of your track work. The light weight design is ideal for model train lovers. So light, its easy to take your whole setup from room to room. Its even no problem to fit in your car trunk. In fact, you might find yourself altering your track design on the daily.

A good toy train track is only as solid as the foundation it is constructed on.

Model Train Table

March 6, 2010 · Filed Under Craft · 1 Comment

So where are you going to place your model train anyway?  That looks pretty good but did you say it gets wet a bit in here when it poors.  That could definitely throw a wrench in the works, huh?  It’s good to carefully think through where we place our setup.  Here’s some ideas:

Just throw it on the floor like your laundry in college:

The lazy solution is to just leave it on the ground.  This preserves the time and trouble of getting or constructing a hobby surface, but it is not very good for tinier locomotives.  Bending over and kneeling down do not make for the best hobbying experiences for adults.  This sort of an overview of the smaller gauges just makes them look tiny and uninteresting.  Not to mention that your locomotives are much more likely to be stepped on and damaged in careless moments.  You really need a display hobby locomotive surface for the HO and tinier variety trains.  Even O trains look better on a display area.

Pre-existing shelves

In some houses there are natural display areas or elevated spaces that lend themselves to hobby locomotive layouts.  Again, the main benefit of this is that you don’t have to go through the extra labor and cost of setting up a toy train table.  Very few of us are this blessed however.  There are some obvious problems to most random display spots.  These spots tend to be too small for a model train setup and they tend not to be configured in the right way.  So, such areas dictate a host of limitations to your hobby training.  This is never a good way to grow your toy train empire.

Another lucky possibility is that you happen to have a spare area just lying around somewhere:

Sometimes you get lucky and serendipitously come across an area at home.  This helps in that you can carry it to the spot you would like, but most tables that are not specifically built for hobby training have other drawbacks.  Not only are many such tables wobbly, but you still have to adjust your train display to conform with the pre-existing measurements of your table rather than the opposite way around.

Home-made toy locomotive tables:

Since lots of us enthusiasts are good with our hands a very popular decision of toy trainers is to make a surface ourselves.  Often we handymen and women will extend an existing space to make it work for the toy locomotive layout we had in mind.  You can also really give your train table some unique personality in this manner.  The obvious negative here is the amount of time and skill that it takes to make such a surface.  Just as huge of a problem is the fact that such tables tend to be permanently one size and as your toy training empire expands you have to go through the trouble of building yet another area to increase your surface space.  Also, if you are pressed for time, this will really add a substantial amount of time that you have to spend getting ready before you even start your actual model training.  I won’t put down homemade surfaces except to say that if your engineering talents don’t extend beyond model locomotives, trying to build a table can really be a black hole of time and effort that you may not have much to show for on the other side.

Hobby surfaces, the decision if for those who are willing to shell out the clams:

There are these special kind of hobby surface that is just perfect for toy training.  These sturdy but lightweight tables come in 2’ by 4’ cutouts that are designed to be connected together in any fashion that you would like so that multiple areas can be put together to fill any space.  These tables do away with many of the spatial limitations that you might have had with other table choices.  This rights the balance of power between you and your table making it so that you dictate the shape of the area rather than the surface dictating the shape of your layout.  Also, because they are lightweight they can more easily be moved out of the way and since they can easily be changed and added to as you see fit, they can grow with your model locomotiveing ambitions.  You can also more easily transport your surface if you want to show your design around.  For this reason, these areas are really the best option for model locomotive displays.

With your [table|surface|area] [choice|decision|option] out of the way you are now free to really embark on your [model|toy|hobby] [train|locomotive] adventure.  Good blessed and happy modeling!

Historic Model Trains

March 6, 2010 · Filed Under Craft · 1 Comment

It’s really hard these days to persuade kids to be interested in our traditions.    If it doesn’t connect to the power grid and add to the monthly electrical bill, lots of boys and girls are just not that into it.  This is after all the cyber age and if a child isn’t reading three things at once he feels like he is slacking.  Even though they consider history to be what happened last week, it’s still important to find ways to get them involved with it.  It’s not enough to know that there were some guys named Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson and Benjamin who now have their faces on our money.  I don’t mean to get on my high horse, but it’s our duty as patriotic Americans to pass on some sense of our rich traditions to them.  So how do we get them to crack the book on the traditions of this country without feeling like we’re pulling teeth? model locomotives can put our youngsters on the track to becoming more culturally and historically literate.  Yes.  That’s right, historic model locomotives.  Here’s how to teach history with toy locomotives:

Use locomotives as a subtle vehicle for history:

If you’ve already gotten your kids involved in model locomotives, a great second step is to create a model train set-up that accurately reveals a particular period and location. Imagine a set-up that is set during Reconstruction in the American Southwest.  You can get your kids to research this period and then add period details that will really add to the enjoyment and historical accuracy of your toydesign.  They might read about the telegraph and add telegraph lines next to the tracks.  A ghost town that failed to capitalize on the railroad because it didn’t get a stop might be shown tantalizingly close to the track.  Maybe even have a few washed out prospectors still panning for gold in the nearby stream.

Spice up the tired old school project by swapping in a toy train setup instead:

You might also manage to talk your kid’s history teacher into allowing him to bring in a historic model locomotive set-up in place of the usual boring diorama.  You will need to lay it out on a portable table and possibly help your youngster bring it in on the day that it is due, but the combination of historic detail and the fascination that such trains inspire simply on their own are likely to really go over well.  Just imagine, for example, adding a toy locomotive display to your kid’s essay on Jesse James.  As your period specific train rounds the curve there are Jesse and his whole gang just waiting to attack and continue his wrong headed crusade.  It’s sure to be a coup!

Visit a model train Museum:

If you’re anywhere in the American West you are never far from historical train sites and museums where toy trains are often featured.  If your local historic train site doesn’t have model locomotives consider suggesting they incorporate some to the curator or manager of the site.  In some places, model locomotive clubs often put on model train events.. Just google it and you are sure to come into contact with your local toy train society.

Whatever you decide to do, you will find that model locomotives are a door to the past even if you don’t explicitly use them as such.  Even if you just do model training without even considering the educational possibilities you will inevitably foster a greater sense of historical knowledge simply by handling these little mechanical doorways to the past.

S Scale Model Railroad

February 27, 2010 · Filed Under Craft · Comment

You want to know what’s really at the cutting edge of toy train world? What’s about to break that has every model trainer tossing and turning with anticipation?  What style of toy train do hobbyists go gaga for?I could go on and on like this, but let me just let the cat out the bag: it’s s gauge model trains. You got it?  You don’t even know what scale that is, do you? Do you even know about different scales?  Alright so here’s what you should know for your next toy train railroader’s meeting:

Here’s a blast from the past, these s scale trains are “American Flyers”:

In a way it begins and ends with this.  But a huge explanation why this gauge is so popular is because after having been decommissioned during World War II, American Flyer retooled and came out with a new line of state of the art trains in s gauge.  This was in huge part an attempt to compete with Lionel who was the king of the roost at the time. S scale is an “inbetween” gauge, way bigger than HO but smaller than Lionel’s O.  Real world trains are 64 times larger than s scale toys whereas real world locomotives are 48 times the size of Lionel’s O.   That signifies that S scale is a bit more user friendly in terms of the minimum space suggestions for the track but still large enough for those of us that are into the arts and crafts aspect of model training. You can still really get into detailing with these large toy locomotives.

S scale is not a standard gauge:

A further reason that s scale has gained such popularity is that s scale is uncommon.  American Flyers are fundamentally the exclusive kind of locomotives that were mass produced in this scale and even American Flyers were only made in this gauge for a brief period just after World War II. That means there are not that many vintage s scale American Flyer trains.   This also means that those collectors of the s scale trains in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s had to make most of their replacement trains from scratch and to meticulously maintain their trains since replacement parts in the pre-google age were difficult to track down.   The nature of this devotion has just made the trains that much more sought after.

American Flyers are about to enter the market again:

American Flyer’s nemesis Lionel bought them out in the 60’s and is now looking to reinvigorate both brands by releasing the vintage 1950’s toys that continue to be so loved by hobbyists.  The great success of these releases has driven Lionel to resolve to re-introduce the s scale locomotives that avid fans are so infatuated with.  It might not be long before we have to make room for s scale as yet another common size in the toy training world.

Now’s the time to put your chips down if you want to cash in early on this tip.  This is when the early adopters wade in and check things out.  Don’t say I didn’t give you a heads up later on. It’s like the coffee house craze of the early 90s.  Not only that, American Flyer and s scale just rock even if nobody were into them.

Model Railroad Sets – How To Choose The Perfect One For You

December 26, 2009 · Filed Under Craft · Comment

Model Trains - A Quick Beginners Overview

Possibly, there are just as many types of model railway sets as forms of actual trains. It isn’t challenging to site them on the internet or in a hobby store in your local town. You can get ones that look just like genuine railroads, fancy ones, railroads from the future, and about everything else.

The sets will have not just the cars, engine, and tracks, but will have buildings also and scenery that you can use to create a simple layout.

One of the really specific variety of model train sets is known as the Bright Sleigh Bell Express for Holidays. The train set is covered in shades that reflect the holiday styling, and it comes with a coal car, an engine, a caboose, and a car for passengers.

There are 75 distinct lights on it, it has bell or a whistle sounds, and it performs various Christmas songs. It also has 12 bowed tracks and 8 unbent, a water tower, and a transformer that will render the set the power it needs to run. Other cars from New Bright will not be able to adapt to this model train set, but there are many Holiday Express cars that are available.

Even though the transformer has adequate power for 80 feet of model railroad track, you might need to get more power if you desire to purchase the clock tower that is musical to go with it. This model train set can be purchased for about $235, but you might be able to discover it in some spots for about $200.

One other of the most commonly bought model railroad sets is known as Bachmann Digital Commander, and is the Deluxe HO Set, and the model number is 00501. Two unlike railways come with this model railway set, and it has On Board Technology from DCC, which allows you to use both of the railways separately, but together.

You’ll be able to insure the speed lighting and what directions the trains are moving with the E-Z Command system. The model train set has the Santa Fe (EMD FT) engine and the Union Pacific (EMD GP40) locomotive. It has 3 cars for cargo, a cabin car, and a station rerailer.

There is more than enough track to create an oval track measuring 47×38, and it has a center for command, magnets, and a power pack. There is as well an instructional DVD that comes with it and a handbook with illustrations.

This model railway set sells for about $300, but you might be able to find it for less than $200.

This article reports just a little taste of what is offered with model train sets. It doesn’t even tell all of the kits and accessories that originates with the sets. There are many various sets for towns, sets for scenery, and bundles that have sufficient trestle in them to create a layout of a mountain pass.

If you are concerned about discovering more blueprints, there are many illustrations and videos you can view. Your lone boundary is how much money you’ve and how much creative thinking you bring to it.

There are communities for people who like model railroad sets, and in some places you can locate shows and museums that are specifically planned for model railroads. There are contests as well for model railway sets admirers to discover who can set up the most fancy railway set, whether it be inside or outside in a garden or in an area that is landscaped.

Model Trains - A Quick Beginners Overview

The number of model railway sets out there likely bests that of real railroads. Outlets like your local hobby store or the Internet possess an plethora of them. You’ll see them in every style known – antique locomotives, monorails, steam engines, and more.

When you buy these sets, you’ll receive everything involved with the complete railroad set, including all the components you’ll require to get a good layout constructed.

The New Bright Sleigh Bell Holiday Express G is a model train set that has been known to be fairly special. The holiday theme is shown through loud, bold colors, and you can get the complete train, from engine to caboose.

You will be able to play Christmas songs and other holiday sounds, as well as illuminate it with 75 lights. The layout supplies a water tower, as well as many optional track shapes to make your own track, powered by an effective transformer. While you may get more Holiday Express accessories to add on to this, you will not find New Bright add ons that fit.

You can run 80 feet of railroad track with the transformer, but it may have a hard time powering that and the optional musical clock tower if you decide to get that as well as everything else. This entire list of materials costs around $235, but you can buy it for cheaper in some retail online stores.

The Bachmann Digital Commander Deluxe HQ Set is a innovative option of model railroad sets out there. You will receive two trains with this set, which you can work at once with separate controls using the advanced DCC On Board technology integrated into the console.

Model Railway Trains – Everything You Must Know To Get Started In The World’s Greatest Hobby

December 26, 2009 · Filed Under Craft · Comment

Model Trains - A Quick Beginners Overview

There are many styles model railway trains to choose from. It can be overwhelming to the point where you feel like you do not know where to start. You can find model railway railroads that are as large as a quarter or half the size of an actual railway. Then there exist model railway railways that are as minuscule as 1/220th the size of a real railroad.

Model railways can be seen in venues such as amusement parks, carnivals and some of the more sizable ones are used for tours of nature preserves as they hardly spoil the natural beauty of the area. While models of this size may seem a bit excessive, not to mention costly this isn’t truly so.

The convenience of greater sized model railway railways is that they can be used for tasks besides just transporting people around an amusement track. For example, if you own a huge piece of land a 1/8th sized functional model railway train could be used to ease your workload by transporting items such as crops, feed, chopped wood and anything else that needs to be taken a long distance across your land.

Even a model railroad railway can be a entirely functioning steam-powered machine with real wood or coal-based combustion chambers and a multitude of other features. And while you may assume a big model railway train is a expensive investment think again.

The initial cost-cutting aspect is that these model train railroads are issued to you as a prefabricated kit. All you need to do to construct it yourself is to follow an easy to follow instructional video.  You have the option to order a kit of the model railway train engine whether you want steam or electric power.

There are numerous model railway train companies put there that offer plans for the train that you can build yourself, they even offer hardware such as the base framework, wheels and couplers. I recommend choosing prefabricated railroad sets so that you will have a fine quality product right out of the box.

That way you will not concern yourself with things such as scale, specifications on load bearings, or other possible problems. All you need do is that you accurately follow the installation instructions and provide your model train railway with a steady foundation. The rate of model railroad train sets right now is low and foundry workers are hard pressed for jobs.

And naturally many people do not have abundant space to house a bigger type of model train. This is why a variety scales exist to accommodate several kinds of indoor and outdoor locales.

For example, there are model railway railway scales so tiny that the entire layout could fit comfortably onto a desk or small table. The most popular scale of model railway railroad is called “HO” which is at 1:87 size.  This HO scale is the easiest one to come across, purchase accessories for, and obtain replacement parts for.  It’s little enough to accommodate any spot yet large enough to really flaunt.

You sometimes find specialty packs such as ones that cater to holiday themes. Many of these model train railway specialty packs sometimes will include a holiday-themed engine. Many times you’ll find these engines emit novelty “smoke” or might emit music.  This normally features as a simple oval track with some pieces of festive props such as decorated homes, carol-playing figurines, or even working lighted lamp posts.

Something parents should keep in mind when contemplating a model railway train as a gift is that they have contents that will involve an electrical outlet. Some styles of the more simple models are often battery powered or even moved by hand via a wooden track.

But if you’re looking for a model train train gift for an adult it’s wise to know ahead of time what amount of space the individual has and the level of interest they may have in model railroad railroads.

Model Railroad Scenery Choices, Costs, and Review

December 26, 2009 · Filed Under Craft · Comment

Model Trains - A Quick Beginners Overview

When you like model trains, the best thing about the hobby, after the train itself, is the scenery, when you make the time to make all of the things that surround it. Regardless of the requirement of the plan for the payout, your scenery will provide the icing on the cake. There’s more you can do to get your layout stand out than simply placing a few fake trees on it.

When it comes to model train scenery, it is so effortless to make your own; from making scale plants from lifesize plastic plants to using toy cars in the scene, there’s nothing you can’t do to make your layout look great. You could especially make buildings out of tin cans and cardboard, putting them together with a little arts and crafts ingenuity and painting them however you like.

Keep in mind, unfortunately, that no matter how much energy you pour into them, your model train scenery just won’y look the same if it is just homemade; it could be the wrong size for one. The only way you will acquire detailed, professional looking model train scenery is if you’re extremely experienced in the acts required; otherwise, it would do your layout well to just buy from a retailer.

You’ll see products and accessories that would beat whatever homemade contraptions you came up with from recycled materials. This is particularly factual of objects that will bear weight, like trestles and bridges. You could discover props for your scenery that may even match the seasons or holidays, like Christmastime accessories complete with carolers and scale lighten lampposts, as well as snow.

If you acquire retail model railway scenery accessories, they are specially sized to be perfectly to scale, so there’s no worrying about whether or not they will look the same in real life. SeveraL times, you can see electrical accessories that can just plug into the preexisting wiring for your train.

You have to find correct model railroad scenery in order to get the best effect. The layout must match the railroad; you don’t need a cargo railway running around a small forest if it is meant to deliver to a little town, so get the right stuff. Warehouses to transport the cargo would work appropriately, as would an oil refinery. If it’s indeed going through the country, grain silos would work as well, and put some animals running through the area.

If this doesn’t gel with your desire to make it yourself, you can still ensure maximum quality by buying model railway scenery accessories that allow you to put the piece together, while still being to scale and accurate. You will be able to entertain the handyman urge, and still have a great, detailed piece of scenery.

There are plenty of places, both on the internet and in your town, that can outfit you with top quality model railroad scenery. You will find plenty of tips on model railway scenery if you shop online, as well as get a greater line of products, so check them out first before going to the local hobby shop, but you can buy things there if you like. You’ll be able to look at the item’s level of professionalism and accuracy.

Model Railroad Scenery – Various Quick Neat Tips

December 26, 2009 · Filed Under Craft · Comment

Model Trains - A Quick Beginners Overview

The complexities of model railroad engines and cars, are probably the main reason why individuals enjoy model railways. The layout of your set would be number three, with model railroad scenery being the number two reason that people delight in having model railways. After you design your layout, the inclusion of the scenery is what allows your railroad set to take on a life of it is own. Your layout blueprint can consist of beautification of much more than just trees and landscaping.

You do have the alternative of borrowing toy cars and figurines from your children, or buying plastic plants to disassemble to be utilizedas trees and shrubs. Unwanted items such as tin cans and cardboard boxes that you might otherwise believe to be garbage, can be recycled and painted to serve as part ofyour scenery.

Homemade model train scenery is a creative idea to build scenery on a budget, but may not matchthe size and scale of your model railway set. It’s quite ambitious, unless you happen to be especially adept at painting and modeling, to compete with the quality and expert details of professionally made products designed especially for your model train set.

You’ll find that for the most part, you cannot think of anything that will hold a candle to the product and accessory alternatives available for model railroad sets. To ensure longevity, always be sure that your bridges and trestles are prefabricated, as they will be relied upon to carry the weight of your trains. The true to life feel of, for instance, holiday accessories, such as carolers, little sized lighted lamp posts, and clock towers that play music, cannot be imitated.

The sizes of the people and vehicles expressly designed as model train scenery for your railroad set have been carefully plannedto appear as though they could ride inside of your toy railways. The command center is the center for operation of the multiple components working with the electrical wiring of your model railway.

You should be cautious in your selection of model train scenery, ensuring that it harmonizes well with the course of your model railroad’s layout. If you’re utilizing a fairly flat town or city layout, and your trains deliver goods, you may want to avoid overwhelming your landscape with trees, mills, and other woodland associated objects. Some more suitable items for transport railroads would be; some warehouses, an oil refinery, and perhaps a couple of semi tractor-trailers. You may want to add various animals, some farm buildings, a grain silo or two, and most likely a windmill if you have chosenselected a country setting for your model railway layout.

To add your own flavor to your model railway scenery, look for the ready to prepare pieces available to railway enthusiasts, that allow you to put the scenery together. In this way, you can have the professional detail that you desire for your train set, but still have the opportunity to take part in its creation.

Model railway scenery can be found in a number of places, including local hobby shops and on the internet. Initially checking with on the internet vendors may be useful as many of your questions can be addressed here, and they will fill you in on the availability of desired items.

This will give you a detailed look at the magnitude of the detail that is used to develop some of these model train scenery parts.
